This is an ideal way of making a fire on wet or boggy ground or even in snow. In its purest form the Swedish Candle is made from a single log which is then chainsawed to produce the ‘castelations’ (see photo). The space between is packed with kindling and lit producing an instant campfire which can then – and this is the bit I like best – be moved wherever you want it to even when its blazing away.
Obviously most of us dont pack a chainsaw when we go hiking but the SC works just as well, if not better, with appropriately sized sticks bound tightly together with wet string, ivy or wire. You can set your pan of water or kettle down to boil the moment its lit without the need to balance it on rocks or set up a bar to hang it from.
